Signs your gutters need attention.

Gutter problems show up long before the damage does.

Most gutter trouble starts small: a clog, a seam that drips, a hanger that lets go. Left alone, the water that should be carried away soaks the fascia, spills down the siding and pools against the foundation.

  • Overflowing in heavy rain
  • Sagging or pulling away from the fascia
  • Drips at seams and corners
  • Peeling paint, rot or stains on the fascia boards
  • Water pooling by the foundation or a damp basement
  • Downspouts that empty against the house
  • Dents from hail

Why seamless gutters.

Sectional gutters are joined every few feet, and every joint is a place where they can leak or pull apart. Seamless gutters are formed in one continuous length for each run of the house, so the only joints are at the corners and downspouts. Fewer seams mean fewer leaks and less upkeep.

Sized for the roof

Most homes use 5-inch or 6-inch K-style gutters. Larger or steeper roofs shed water faster and often need the bigger size and more downspouts to keep up with a summer downpour.

Gutter guards.

Fewer clogs, fewer ladder trips.

Gutter guards cover the top of the gutter to keep leaves, twigs and roof grit out while letting the water in. On a house with trees nearby they cut clogs down sharply. We install gutter guards and can recommend a type that suits the trees and roof on your home.

Gutters and your roof

Gutters catch everything your roof sheds. When they clog or overflow, water backs up under the roof edge, rots the fascia and soffits, and in winter feeds ice dams that push water under the shingles. That is why we look at the roof edge along with the gutters, so the whole system drains the way it should.

Downspouts and drainage.

Getting the water off the roof is only half the job.

A gutter is only as good as where it sends the water. Downspouts that empty right next to the house dump hundreds of gallons against the foundation in a single storm, which is how many wet basements start.

Enough downspouts for the size of the roof, placed where the ground slopes away from the house, and extensions or splash blocks that carry the water several feet out, keep it away from the walls and foundation. We look at where your downspouts drain when we plan new gutters.

Gutter questions.

Should I repair or replace my gutters?

A leaking seam, a loose hanger or one bent section can usually be repaired. Gutters that sag along their length, leak at many joints or overflow even when they are clean are usually better replaced, often with seamless gutters.

Do gutter guards mean I never have to clean my gutters?

No guard makes gutters maintenance-free. Guards keep out leaves and most debris, so clogs and ladder trips drop a lot, but fine grit from the roof can still build up and is worth checking now and then.

Can hail damage gutters?

Yes. Hail dents gutters and downspouts, and those dents are often one of the first signs a storm also hit the roof. Gutter damage is commonly part of a storm insurance claim.

Why does my basement get wet when it rains?

Often the water is coming off the roof. Clogged or overflowing gutters, and downspouts that empty right next to the foundation, send water straight down the wall. Fixing the gutters and moving the water away from the house is usually the first step.
