The first 24 hours.
What to do after a storm damages your home.
- Stay safe. Stay off the roof, keep away from downed lines, and leave any room where the ceiling is sagging or water is coming through.
- Limit the damage, if it’s safe. Move belongings and put out buckets and towels. If the roof is open, call us to tarp it.
- Take photos and video. The damage outside from the ground, the damage inside, and the date. Keep receipts for anything you spend protecting the house.
- Get an inspection, then talk to your insurer. We tell you what we find, so you know what you are reporting.
- Keep it in writing. Write down the date of the storm, save notes from calls with your insurer, and get any estimate or agreement in writing before work begins.

Hail, wind and ice.
Hail
Hail bruises and cracks shingles, knocks off their protective granules and dents gutters, vents and siding. The damage is often invisible from the ground, which is why an inspection matters even when the roof looks fine.
Wind
High winds lift, crease and tear off shingles and peel back flashing. A lifted shingle can lie back down looking normal with its seal broken, then leak in the next storm.
Ice and snow
Heavy snow stresses older roofs, and ice dams form at the eaves when melting snow refreezes, pushing water under the shingles and into ceilings.
Storms in Montgomery County.
On May 27, 2019, an EF4 tornado touched down near Brookville and tracked through Trotwood and into Dayton, one of several tornadoes that night across the Dayton area, according to the National Weather Service. Most storm damage is less dramatic: a hailstorm or a summer windstorm that leaves a roof quietly damaged and leaking months later.
The age of local homes matters too. About three in four homes in Montgomery County were built before 1980, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, so many roofs here have less life left to absorb a bad storm.

Storm damage questions.
How do I know if hail damaged my roof?
From the ground, look for dented gutters, downspouts and vents, granules washing out of the downspouts, and dings on siding or window screens. Damage to the shingles themselves is often invisible from below, so the safest way to know is an inspection. Please don’t climb on the roof.
Should I call my insurance company or a roofer first?
Either order works. Many homeowners find it helpful to know what is actually damaged before they call the insurer, and a free inspection gives you that with no obligation.
Is there a time limit to file a claim?
Most policies set a deadline for reporting damage, and it varies by policy. Check yours or ask your agent, and don’t wait: damage gets worse, and harder to tie to one storm, over time.
Will filing a claim raise my rates?
That depends on your insurer and your policy. Your agent can tell you how a claim would affect you.
