Until help arrives.

A few steps keep a bad day from getting worse.

  1. Get people safe. Leave any room with a sagging ceiling, and keep away from water near outlets and fixtures.
  2. Cut the power if water is near it, at the breaker panel, if you can reach it safely.
  3. Catch the water. Buckets, towels and plastic sheeting on the floor, and move what you can out of the way.
  4. Stay off the roof. Wet, damaged roofs are dangerous, especially after dark or in wind.
  5. Take photos of the damage inside and out for your insurance claim.

What emergency tarping does.

Tarping covers the open or damaged section of the roof with heavy tarps fastened over the damage, so rain and snow stay out of the house while the permanent repair is planned. It protects the house; it doesn’t fix the roof.

Once your home is covered, we inspect the full damage and go over your options, including the insurance claim. How storm damage help works.

Emergency questions.

Is tarping a permanent fix?

No. A tarp keeps rain and snow out while the permanent repair or replacement is planned. Once the house is protected, we inspect the full damage and talk you through your options.

How long can a tarp stay on a roof?

A tarp is meant to be short-term. Sun and wind wear it down, so the permanent repair should follow as soon as it can be scheduled.

Will insurance cover emergency tarping?

Many policies expect you to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, and temporary repairs are often part of the claim. Keep your receipts and check your policy.

Water is coming through a light fixture. What do I do?

Turn off power to that area at the breaker panel if you can do it safely, keep away from the fixture, and call for help.
